  • Family Bible Notes:

Servant; greatness in Christ's kingdom consists not in outward authority over others, but in the abundance of our labors and sacrifices for the welfare of our brethren. The greatest in the kingdom of Christ are those who most love him and their fellow-men, and are most ready to honor the one and do good to the other.

  • 1599 Geneva Bible Notes:
    (No comment on this verse).

  • People's New Testament Commentary:

He that is greatest. Instead of seeking chief seats at feasts or in the synagogues, and titles that will exalt him above others, let him seek to become the servant of all.

  • Albert Barnes' Commentary:

He that shall humble himself, etc. God will exalt or honour him that is humble, and that seeks a lowly place among men. That is true religion, and God will and God will reward it.

  • Jamieson-Faussett Brown:

But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant--This plainly means, "shall show that he is so by becoming your servant"; as in Mt 20:27, compared with Mr 10:44.

  • Spurgeon Commentary on Matthew:

This is nearly the same lesson that is recorded in (Mt 20:27.) Our Lord had to repeat many times this law of his kingdom: "He that is greatest among you shall be your servant." You are all equal; but if there is one amongst you who claims to be the greatest, he shall be the servant of all. Where our King rules, any one of his disciples who exalts himself shall be abased; while, on the other hand, the one who humbles himself shall be exalted. The way to rise is to sink self; the lower we fall in our own esteem, the higher shall we rise in our Master's estimation.

  • Spurgeon Devotional Commentary:

    (No comment on this verse).

  • Adam Clarke's Commentary:

     Your servant. , deacon.

  • Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary:
