History of the Day1 Follow Up Program
In the summer of 2001, the United Methodist Church launched a nationwide media campaign. McUMC ( now Third Place Ministries) was on the crest of this wave of media technology. Our board authorized the creation of several radio spots and purchased air time on the local radio station, 99.1 WCBL-AM/FM. A few weeks into our relationship with WCBL, Jim Freeland mentioned that a Sunday morning slot was opening up on WCBL. It had been an hour long worship service provided by one of the local churches. He asked if one of our churches would be interested in filling the spot. We had no churches in McUMC with services that fit the radio broadcast schedule, so the idea went away for a while.

Days later, as Third Place Ministries continued to explore options for media involvement, some information came to light on a nationally syndicated radio program sponsored in part by the United Methodist Church. The Board did a little research and discovered that The Protestant Hour would be a great addition to the WCBL lineup. There was only one problem: The Protestant Hour was only thirty minutes long. We would have to fill the other thirty minutes of the slot. The show's producers hit upon the idea of a round table discussion with local people sharing thoughts and ideas. The idea slowly began to gather steam, and today its a regular part of the WCBL lineup.

In the Summer of 2002, The Protestant Hour became Day1. Now, Marshall Countians may listen to the Day1 weekly radio program on WCBL FM each Sunday morning at 9:30am, and the Day1 Follow Up program at 10:00am. Day1 is hosted byRev. Peter Wallace, Host of the Day1 program Executive Producer Rev. Peter Wallace and features some of the country's finest preachers. Day1 is the voice of the mainline Protestant churches, presenting outstanding preachers from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Episcopal Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), United Church of Christ, United Methodist Church, and other denominations. Our website features an extensive library of lectionary-based sermons in text and audio, and other helpful information for lay persons and pastors.
Day1 began broadcasting in 1945 as "The Protestant Hour" and has been on the air every week since, currently on more than 200 stations. Day1 is a ministry of the Alliance for Christian Media, a nonprofit mainline media ministry based in Atlanta, GA. The Alliance was created after the merger of The Protestant Hour, Inc. and the Episcopal Media Center, which was founded in 1945 and originally called The Episcopal Radio and TV Foundation. The Alliance for Christian Media has been instrumental in producing Emmy-winning TV programming such as "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" and "Shadowlands."
