Quotes & Notes on:     Luke 21:33

11/2006 -- Observe that few commentaries specifically touch on this verse.  The emphasis of the passage is on the Second Coming of Christ.  The permanent nature of His words extends through the prophetic eschatological events which are signs to believers of all future generations of the true character of all the words Jesus uttered.  The redemptive words of Jesus will be fulfilled regardless of the state of the earth or how long before His second coming.  His words are as relevant for us today as they were for those who first heard them, and as they will be for those who will be last to hear of them.

11/29/2009 -- "The Everlasting Word of God Prepares Us" for a life of Joy and Peace.

[We must consider] that a full understanding of His words is hidden from us.... It is worth asking whether the coming of the end is not dependent in some way upon the church's fulfillment of the command to evangelize the world.

  • David Guzik, Study Guide for Luke:
No mere man could truthfully say this. Jesus claims that His words are the very words of God - and they are.

  • Chuck Smith, Study Guide for Luke:
The whole system is moving towards this climax, the return of Jesus Christ in power and glory. But when we see the signs of that return, we know that our redemption is so close. And Jesus affirms it; He says, "Now look, heaven and earth will pass away, but not My words."

  • Robertson's Word Pictures:
My words shall not pass away (hoi logoi mou ou mę pareleusontai). Future middle indicative with ou mę, a bit stronger statement than the subjunctive. It is noteworthy that Jesus utters these words just after the difficult prediction in verse Lu 21:32.

    Bill's Starting Point

    The Permanent Word

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away."
    Luke 21:33

    • The Word of God is eternal.
      • Past
      • Present
      • Future

    The Permanent Word

     1. The teachings of Christ will always be at least as relevant

    as Heaven and earth

    2.  Our temporal lives are gradually being replaced with eternal qualities

    3. The eternal words of Jesus impart everlasting spirituality.
