    Bill's Starting Point

    Our Personal Testimonies
"And ye are witnesses of these things."
    Luke 24:48

The Gospel is transmitted by word of mouth: the Great Commission.
      1.  A witness is one who can testify from first-hand experience.
      2.  The first believers had their own stories to tell.
      3.  We each have our own stories to tell.
We are invited to help other people come into saving faith by broadcasting information about our personal relationships with Christ.

    Quotes & Notes

    • An important thing remained-the basis of true faith: the words of Christ, and the testimony of scripture. This He sets before them. But two things were yet required. First, they needed capacity to understand the word. He opens their understanding therefore, that they might understand the scriptures, and establishes them as witnesses that were not only able to say, "Thus it is, for we have seen it"; but "Thus it must needs have been, for so hath God said in his word"; and the testimony of Christ Himself was fulfilled in His resurrection.

    • - John Darby,  Synopsis of  the New Testament
    • As they were witnesses of the truth of his humanity, having seen, and heard, and handled him, both before, and after his resurrection from the dead.

    • - John Gill,  Exposition of the Bible
    • Then opened he, &c.--a statement of unspeakable value; expressing, on the one hand, Christ's immediate access to the human spirit and absolute power over it, to the adjustment of its vision, and permanent rectification for spiritual discernment (than which it is impossible to conceive a stronger evidence of His proper divinity); and, on the other hand, making it certain that the manner of interpreting the \ Old Testament which the apostles afterwards employed (see the Acts and Epistles), has the direct sanction of Christ Himself.

    • - Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary
    • This was appointed most graciously and  wisely: graciously, as it encouraged the, greatest sinners to repent, when they saw that even the murderers of Christ were not excepted from mercy: and wisely, as hereby Christianity was more abundantly attested; the facts being published first on the very spot where they happened. -John Wesley, Notes Upon the New Testament
    • The great gospel privilege of the remission of sins must be proposed to all, and assured to all that repent, and believe the gospel.  "Go, tell a guilty world, that stands convicted and condemned at God's bar, that an act of indemnity has passed the royal assent, which all that repent and believe shall have the benefit of, and not only be pardoned, but preferred by."

    • - Matthew Henry, Concise Commentary, p.844
    • [He opened their understanding] by a direct internal enlargement and enlivening of their spiritual faculties.  - D.D. Whedon, Commentary, p.221
    • The presence of fish suggests an original Galilean setting for this appearance story, while the meal context suggests the association of the original resurrection appearances with the Eucharist.

    • - Reginald H. Fuller, Preaching the Lectionary, p.260
    • Again it is stressed that the death and resurrection of Christ are according to scripture.  Christ is not only the fulfillment of the OT but also its interpreter.  Most important, his interpretation must be announced to the world.

    • - William Baird,  Interpreter's One-Volume Commentary, p.706
