George Wigram's Englishman's Greek and Hebrew Concordances were
produced in 1839 and 43 respectively and contain a complete listing of
all occurrences of each unique Greek and Hebrew word in the New and
Old Testaments. It was not until fifty years later that James Strong
assigned numbers to each unique word in the Old and New Testaments and
produced a dictionary listing each word with its number. This
electronic text combines Wigram's identification (of each unique
word's occurrence) and Strong's numbering system, using Strong's
numbers to mark each location where Wigram identified a particular
word. The result is a 100% accurate Strong's Concordance imbedded
within the KJV.
The printed editions used for producing this electronic text were
The Englishman's Hebrew and Chaldee Concordance of the Old
Testament; Broadman (ISBN 0-8054-1387-1), reprint of Wigram's
Fifth Ed. 1890.
The New Englishman's Hebrew Concordance; Hendrickson (ISBN
0-913573-21-3), reprint of "The Englishman's Hebrew and Chaldee
Concordance of the Old Testament," Wigram, First Ed. 1843.
(Nothing from this reprint causing it to be called "New" was
included into the electronic text. Only Wigram's original
identifications were used.)
The Englishman's Greek Concordance of the New Testament; Broadman
(ISBN 0-8054-1388-X), reprint of Wigram's Ninth Ed., 1903.
The New Englishman's Greek Concordance and Lexicon; Hendrickson
(ISBN 0-913573-23-X), reprint of "The Englishman's Greek
Concordance," Wigram, First Ed. 1839. (Nothing from this reprint
causing it to be called "New" was included into the electronic
text. Only Wigram's original identifications were used.)
The structure of the numbers are as follows:
Hebrew:
======
For every Strong number, there may be an optional verb and/or
one-character source-character (q for qere, k for kethiv) delimited by
hyphens. Furthermore, in those cases where various readings occur, and
where a choice may be made between Strong's numbers, there will be
multiple sequences of Strong's numbers (with optional verb and/or
margin delimited by hyphens) separated by vertical bars. For instance,
First Samuel 13:8 contains the following:
3176-55|3176-11-k
Here the translators followed the qere marginal reading which is
Strong's number 3176 with verb number 55; while the kethiv reading
contains 3176 with verb number 11.
To put this in different terms, there may be one to many Strong's
numbers separated by vertical bars. For each Strong's number there
may be zero to two sub-identifiers delimited by hyphens. If only one
sub-identifier occurs it may be either a numeric verb identifier or a
one character (q or k) source identifier. If both sub-identifiers
occur, the first will be a numeric verb identifier and the second will
be a one-character (q or k) source identifier.
