  4. Died in Caesarea in 254 during Decian persecution

  7. Biblical critic and exegete
  8. Interpreted Scripture allegorically
  9. Wrote numerous commentaries and doctrinal works including
    1. On Prayer - an apology
    2. Contra Celsum (Against Celsus) - defense of Christianity against the attacks of the pagan Celsus
    3. De Principiis (On First Principles) - four books beleived to be Christianity's first systematic theology
  10. Compiled Hexapla
    1. About 9,000 pages in length
    2. Contained Old Testament in six columns
      1. Hebrew
      2. Greek transliteration of Hebrew
      3. Septuagint
      4. Greek translation of Aquila
      5. Greek translation of Theodotion
      6. Greek translation of Symmachus
