11 And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.

12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.

13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

14 And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.

Issues

  1. Next day, after the healing of the Centurion's servant
    1. Christ was doing good every day, and never had cause to complain that he had lost a day.
      Matthew Henry Commentary
  2. City of Nain
    1. This city was in Galilee, in the boundaries of the tribe of Issachar. It was about two miles south of Mount Tabor, and not far from Capernaum. It is now a small village inhabited by Jews, Mohammedans, and Christians. Dr. Thomson (The Land and the Book, vol. ii. p. 158) locates it on the north-west corner of a mount now called Jebel ed Duhy, one hour's ride from the foot of Mount Tabor. Albert Barnes
    2. The name Nain in Hebrew meant "Pleasant Place" and was said by the rabbis to be a reference to the promise given to Issachar that he would inherit a land that was pleasant (Genesis 49:14-15). John Stevenson Bible Study
  3. Burial outside the city
    1.  Anciently no Jews were buried within the walls of the city, except the kings and distinguished persons, 1Sa 28:3; 2Ki 21:18. Albert Barnes
  4. Widow's only son
  5. Jesus had compassion on her
  6. Jesus told him to Arise
  7. He that was dead sat up and spoke
    1.  It is objected that the symmetry of these cases (daughter of Jairus raised from the death-bed, this widow's son raised from the bier, Lazarus raised from the tomb) is suspicious, but no one Gospel gives all three.
      Robertson's Word Pictures
  8. Fear came over everybody
  9. People glorified God
    1. Prophet risen among us
    2. God has visited his people
  10. Rumor spread throughout Judaea and all the region around
    1. This great miracle caused the fame of Jesus to fill all Judaea as well as Galilee. It seems, from what next follows, to have reached John the Baptist in his prison on the east of the Dead Sea. See Mt 11:2. The Fourfold Gospel
