Text
15 But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;
16 And charged them that they should not make him known:
17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.
19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.
21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
7 But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea: and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judaea,
8 And from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him.
9 And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him.
10 For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues.
11 And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.
12 And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known.
Differences
  1. When Jesus knew of the conspiracy against him (vs 15)
  2. Withdrew from thence
  3. He healed them all (vs 15)
  4. Charging those who were healed not to make him known (vs 15)
  5. Esaias the prophet (vs 17-21)
  1. Withdrew with disciples to the sea (vs 7)
  2. Multitudes from Galilee, Judaea, Jerusalem, Idumaea, beyond Jordan, Tyre and Sidon (vs 7-8)
  3. Had disciples bring a boat because of multitude (vs 9)
  4. Healing many and casting out unclean spirits (vs 10-11)
  5. Charging the unclean spirits not to make him know (vs 12)

Issues

  1. Jesus knowledge of the conspiracy (Mt 12:15)

    1.  Perceiving (gnous). Second aorist active participle of ginôskô. Jesus read their very thoughts. They were now plain to any one who saw their angry countenances.  Robertson's Word Pictures

  2. Withdrawing from "thence" to "the sea" (Mt 12:1 & Mk 3:7)

    1. Some (ie Clarke) place the healing of the man with a withered hand in the synagogue on the Sabbath (Event 058) and the conspiracy against Jesus (Event 059) at an unknown location other than Capernaum because this event says Jesus went to the sea, and Capernaum is already at the sea.  Others (ie People's) place the event at Capernaum, the reference being only leaving the synagogue area of Capernaum and going to the seashore area.

    2.  It is the part of prudence and Christian charity not to provoke, if possible, the blind and the hardened; and to take from them the occasion of sin. Adam Clarke Commentary

  3. Multitudes that followed from various locations (Mk 3:7-8)

  4. Healing

    1. All (Mt. 12:15)

    2. Many (Mk 3:10)

    3. People pressing to touch him, and many with plagues (Mk 3:10)

    4. Unclean spirits falling down before him and identifying him (Mk 3:11)

  5. Charge not to make him known

    1. Those who were healed (Mt. 12:17)

    2. Unclean spirits (Mk 3:12)

    3. Referenced as fulfillment of Isaiah 42:1-4 (Mt. 12:17)

      1. The passage quoted is Isa 42:1-4 "a very free reproduction of the Hebrew with occasional side glances at the Septuagint" (Bruce), possibly from an Aramaic collection of Testimonia (McNeile). Matthew applies the prophecy about Cyrus to Christ.  Robertson's Word Pictures
