Text 12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and     Nephthalim:
14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. 1 When therefore the LORD knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,
2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)
3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
4 And he must needs go through Samaria.

  • Time Frame:  Sometime between April and December in the year 27
    • John's arrest took place in April of 27, soon after Jesus began his public ministry
    • Next event, Woman at the Well, probably in December

  • Note:  The next several events are are events given only in John.  Then as the second year of ministry comes around, strikingly similar set of events takes place after Jesus goes to Jerusalem.  Most of the events of the next year are only mentioned in the synoptic gospels.  His life is threatened this time instead of John's and he leaves to go to Nazareth.   After being rejected in Nazareth he returns to Capernaum.  Also note that this event of leaving Jerusalem and going to Galilee contains within it also the event of the Woman at the Well and possibly, if it all takes place at the later time as suggested in the synoptics, several other events including his rejection at Nazareth after preaching in the synagogue.  For now, in this study we use the scenario of the second year's return to Jerusalem, followed by rejection at Nazareth and return to Capaernaum.  See Return to Jerusalem (Event 38 in April of 28).

  • Location of Capernaum
  • Reason for Leaving Judea:  Pharisees focus shift from John to Jesus
  • Reason for Living in Capernaum:  Ancient prophecy of Isaiah
