  • Robertson's Word Pictures:
He laid his hands upon her (epethêken autêi tas cheiras). First aorist active indicative of epitithêmi. As the Great Physician with gentle kindness. She was made straight (anôrthôthê). First aorist (effective) passive indicative of anorthoô, old verb, but only three times in the N.T. (Lu 13:13; Heb 12:12; Ac 15:16), to make straight again. Here it has the literal sense of making straight the old woman's crooked back. She glorified God (edoxazen ton theon). Imperfect active. Began it (inchoative) and kept it up.

Quotes on Luke 13:10-17
Suggest a Quote
  • Probably in a spiritual as well as natural sense, to be loosed.

  • - John Wesley, Notes Upon the New Testament, Vol. 1, on Luke 13:16
  • Note how the disability is said to be due to 'a spirit of infirmity' (v.11), a state of being bound by Satan (v.16).  Human suffering is due to the same cosmic power as human sin.  The final note brings out how the people rejoiced at the salvation revealed in Jesus while His opponents had nothing to say.

  • - I.H. Marshall, New Bible Commentary, Revised (1970):  Luke, p. 909
  • Crooked souls seek not to Christ;  but he calls them to him, lays the hand of his power and grace upon them, speaks a healing word to them, by which he looses them from their infirmity, makes the soul straight, reduces it to order, raises it above  worldly regards, and directs its affections and aims heavenward.

  • - Matthew Henry, Commentary, Vol. 5, p. 724
  • The ruler of the synagogue, angry because Jesus had healed the infirm woman on the sabbath, attacked Him indirectly by charging the people not to come for healing on the sabbath day.  Jesus exposed his hypocrisy and so put him to shame before the people.

  • - J. McNicol, New Bible Commentary (1954): Luke, p. 853
  • Jesus, moved with pity, did not wait for the woman to ask to be healed.

  • - Henry H. Halley, Halley's Bible Handbook, p. 512
  • In presenting with divine authority the definitive interpretation of the Law, Jesus found himself confronted by certain teachers of the Law who did not accept his interpretation of the Law, guaranteed though it was by the divine signs that accompanies it.  This was the case especially with the sabbath laws, for he recalls often with rabbinical arguments, that the sabbath rest is not violated by serving God and neighbor, which his own healings did.

  • - Ratzinger, Joseph, Imp., Catechism of the Catholic Church,  ¶582
  • Jesus' cure of the woman takes place in the context of his teaching, on which the major emphasis in the travel account falls.

  • - Fitzmyer, Joseph A., Trans., Anchor Bible, Vol. Luke X-XXIV, p.1012
  • Jesus lays his hand upon her, through which a heavenly power is poured, and the Satanic spell disappears.

  • - D.D. Whedon, Commentary on the Gospels, Vol. Luke-John, p. 137

    Luke 13:10-17

10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.
12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
13 And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.
15 The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, dot not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?
16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?
17 And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious  things that were done by him.
